Welcome back to school everyone! I heard lots of wonderful stories of your adventures over the break today. Hopefully you all had some down time with family and friends during the past two weeks and are rested and ready to start up again.
Today we started with sharing about our holiday and then we went on to Spelling. This was followed by DPA, and the class voted to play Capture the Flag.
Following that, the children had recess and then WW, where we got the balls rolling on their fractured fairytale planning, and started to do some writing today. Everyone is now working on their discovery drafts. Be sure to ask your child what fairytale they are fracturing!
Then we had Math, and the 3's continued their work from before the break about polygons, while the 4's started their unit on geometry with some review from last year of spheres, prisms and cylinders. They were quite surprised at how many of those shapes were in our classroom when we went on a scavenger hunt for them!
After lunch we had Science, and Term 3 marks the beginning of our new unit on weather! We learned about the atmosphere today, and the students watched a neat music video about the layers of the atmosphere. I promised them I'd post a link to the video, so here it is: Atmosphere Song . It's catchy, and a great way to remember the different elements of each layer of the atmosphere.
We finished the day with chapel, and Mrs. Hills shared the story of Judas and Christ.

The kids are counting down and I'm sure the room will be buzzing tomorrow with it being the last day prior to Spring Break!
We had a busy today, but accomplished a lot. It all began with Bible, and the students worked on their 'Story of Creation' posters. They're in pairs for this activity, with the hope that they can work with each other's strengths.
After Bible it was on to Handwriting and Grammar. The 4's worked on their connecting letters in Handwriting today while the 3's learned upper-case S and G, both tricky letters. In Grammar we went on to capital letters, which most of the students found to be quite simple.
After recess the class had Music and then DPA. We went on to Math afterwards, and the 3's finished up any incomplete Math while the 4's completed the unit review prior to their test tomorrow.
This afternoon we finished any incomplete kites in Art, and then the students worked on some chalk drawings of spring.
Our day concluded with chapel, led by Mrs. Campbell. She spoke about how much our words can affect others, in positive and negative ways. On that note, we ended our day with everyone having someone say something nice about them in our classroom. It was an activity that pushed many of the students because they didn't get to choose who they were saying something nice to. A couple needed help from classmates because they couldn't think of anything kind to say about their classmates. We'll keep working on it so that hopefully this comes more easily for them in the future. Kind words build our friends up, and the more we can do that, the better!

What a wonderful Wednesday it is!
We began the day with RW, and the Guided Reading groups that haven't finished their novel studies worked on those while the others had Independent Reading. Then it was on to WW, and we continued our work with fractured fairytales. The children read a couple more, and afterwards we headed off to the lab to start story mapping our own. Everything takes longer in the lab, due to technological glitches and so many questions, but we did get a start on our character maps (a few even finished). Be sure to ask your child which fairy tale he or she has chosen to fracture, and what element they're going to change (character, setting, conflict or resolution).
Following recess, the students had Math. The Grade 3's wrote their test on fractions, which came home tonight, and the 4's started subtracting decimals. I've encouraged the 4's to bring home their texts to review the fraction and decimal work we've done for their test on Friday.
The class then headed off to P.E. with Mr. Banman, as well as some catch up on late work time. It would be ideal to have everyone caught up before heading to spring break, as anything that is not complete will be brought home over the break. Hopefully nothing!
This afternoon we had S.S., and finished Ch. 6 in our textbook. Following the break we'll learn about the Europeans exploring North America and why they came this way.

Then we had RW, and the students finished reading Chapter 10 with me, and then we did the comprehension questions together. Then we read some fractured fairytales, many of which were hilarious!
After recess the class had Music, and then Math. The 3's were working on review for their test tomorrow while the 4's added decimals (they were surprised at how easy it was!). Check out these websites to play some fun, online math games: Baseball Math Decimal Math Games Hungry Puppies Adding Game

Good afternoon everyone!
We began our last week before Spring Break with RW and ventured into our guided reading novels. Two of the groups have now finished their story. We'll be wrapping up these novels over the next week (if your child's group isn't finished, they will be encouraged to take it home over Spring Break and read it), and heading into a study of Christian literature for a number of weeks in April and May.
Then we had Spelling, which are review words this week, and just 12 per grade. The students will also have to recite The Lord's Prayer on Friday for their memory verse.
The students taught me how to play 4 corner soccer today during DPA, which was loads of fun.
After recess we had Math, and the 3's continued with their review of fractions and the 4's learned about hundredths. Then we were treated to some presentations put on by the middle school students, which everyone enjoyed. Ask your child which was his or her favourite (other than the cupcakes! They all loved that!).
We had our Science test this afternoon, and I'll do my best to get those back to your children as soon as possible.
Many from our class led worship in chapel today, which was such a treat!

The class is buzzing with talk of fractured fairytales, which is the unit we're heading into with writing. We had a hilarious time today reading, The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, and then the students went on to read a different fractured fairytale. On Monday we'll compare the fairytale they read with a traditional fairytale. Soon they'll be off writing their own fractured fairytale (where they change either the character, the setting, the conflict or the resolution from a traditional fairytale). They're excited about it! Please read a few to your children at home if you have them, just to give them more options to choose from when fracturing their fairytale.
We had devotions this morning as well, and the Spelling test and memory verse check. Reading Workshop was spent finishing some work from Chapter 9 of our Literature Study, and then reading independently. Before going out for recess the children listened to my read aloud from The Hobbit.
In Math today, the 3's did some review work (remember their test is on Wednesday!), and the 4's started talking about decimals! We learned today that 3/10 is equal to 0.3. Monday we're moving on to hundredths.
For Science we did some review work today in the format of a game which everyone enjoyed. It also gave the students an idea of what to expect on the quiz.

We opted to stay indoors today for recess and lunch, so everyone stayed dry for school hours anyway! :)
The day began for us with Bible, and we started a study on creation, using Genesis 1. Ask your children which days we looked at today.
Then it was on to Handwriting, and the 4's worked on Vv, while the 3's worked on upper case T and F. For Grammar today we did review.
After recess the class had Music and DPA, and then Math. The 3's did a unit review and the 4's were comparing fractions with different denominators.
Following lunch we had Art, and did some more work on the kites that the students started a couple of weeks ago. I'm determined to make it look more like Spring in our classroom!

We began today with RW, and the students spent some time reading independently. Then we had WW and we continued on familiarizing ourselves with traditional fairy tales. Then we read Puss in Boots together, and then story mapped it (click here to see the program we used). Next time we have WW the students will story map a fairy tale of their own.
Following recess we had Math, and the Grade 3's are nearing the end of their unit on fractions, which means they'll have a test next Wednesday. The Grade 4's still have a number of concepts to learn, so I'll keep working with them for a few more classes.

We had a damp day on the playground today, but plenty of learning took place inside. We began with Spelling and the next part of our memory verse.
Then on to our literature study and today we read chapter 9. Afterwards we began our new unit on fairy tales. This will be a combined RW and WW unit, with the culminating activity being to write their own version of a fairy take.
After drying off from recess the class had Music and then Math. The Grade 3 students compared fractions using greater than, less than and equal to today whole the 4's went on to solve some word problems using fractions
Following lunch, we had Science and the students worked on a mini research project about a local animal and it's placement in a good chain. The students were told they'd have a Science test on Monday. Review sheets will go home by Thursday.
