Good Friday afternoon everyone!
We had a wonderful day today, starting with devotions with Mrs. Everett. Then we went on to our Spelling Test and most of the class did exceptionally well. On the other hand, the memory verse didn't go very well. Many of the students didn't know it (more than half didn't know any of it). Please help your child work on this at home every week. Next week will just be the entire Lord's Prayer, so feel free to get a head start over the weekend.
This was followed by RW, and we read some more in our Guided Reading groups focusing today on clarifying information. I read to the class from 'The Hobbit' while they had their recess snacks.
In the latter part of the morning we had Math (fractions continued!), and then spent some time doing All The Right Type and a typing assessment.
After lunch we had Science (ask your children what a food web is, and what a food chain is, and what every food chain always starts with!), enjoyed a funny Bill Nye movie about food webs, and then had our monthly B.U.G. draw. I'll email the pizza winners about the pizza B.U.G. lunch shortly.
The class ended their week with P.E. with Mr. Banman.

I am one proud teacher this afternoon. What a wonderful job my class did with their reading of Psalm 23, and singing, 'There is a Redeemer'! They worked so well as a team, and along with everyone else in the school's efforts, pulled off a wonderful Grandparent's Day assembly.
Of course, there were other things that took place today. We started with Handwriting. The 3's learned upper-case B and R today, and the 4's worked on their upper-case U's. For Grammar we talked about adverbs today, and the proper use of 'good' and 'well'.
After library and recess the class had Music, and then joined my middle-school French class to watch some plays that they have been working on. Most were familiar stories ('Cinderella' and 'The Little Red Hen'), so they were easy to follow.
Then we had Math, and trudged our way through more work on fractions. The 4's had a challenging assignment, and some have it for homework. If this causes any stress at home, please just leave it and I'll help them further in class tomorrow.
The afternoon was full of fun with our families! Grandparents, aunties, uncles, friends, moms and dads alike made visits to our room, and the children were so excited to show them what they've been working on, and were astounded at their memory of events from the past (particularly how many of them remembered their Grade 3 teachers!). It's a winter wonderland out there today! I'm glad all but one of our students made it in today, as we had a very productive time at school, despite the blinding distraction outside (but isn't it beautiful!).
We began the day with sharing our highlights from the weekend, and then went on to our Daily Gram. After
that we head RW, and the students continued with their Guided Reading groups, today focusing on summarizing what they read. One group started a new novel, 'Freckle Juice' by Judy Blume
Then we had Spelling as well as our memory verse. I realized that many of the students are unfamiliar with the Lord's Prayer, so the first part of that is our verse this week.
We went outside for DPA and enjoyed the snow. Please make sure your children are dressed for whatever weather we have. On a day like today, boots, mitts and a warm coat are essential.
After recess we had WW, and the students continued working on their choice writing, with a focus on descriptive words. We also read, "If You're Not From the Prairie" by David Bouchard, who uses superior descriptive writing.
Then we were on to Math, and the 3's finished their assignment from last week (due tomorrow if not finished in class) while the 4's went on to further work with fractions.
The children enjoyed an outdoor lunch break in the snow, and then warmed up inside while they ate. Following that we had Science, and did two activities involving food chains and webs. Here are some photos of that:

We had such a fun day today! We started with our medal count and journal writing, and then went on to Bible. Our lesson today was about God as the Holy Spirit. The students are getting so quick at looking up the verses from their Bibles as they learn the order of the books!
Then we had our usual Thursday combo of Handwriting (Grade 3's learned upper case S, T, D and E today) and then Grammar (continuing our work on pronouns and on to adjectives).
It was off to Library after that, and then our surprise! The class had the pleasure of watching the end of the 2nd period and the 3rd period plus overtime of the women's gold medal hockey game with the rest of the school in the sanctuary! What an exciting game it was to watch, too.
Then we squeezed in 10 minutes of Math (what a mean teacher I am!), continuing our work with fractions.
After lunch we had Art, and the students did a fantastic job today. They were thrilled with the results, so be sure to ask them about the symmetry art they did. It was only step 1 of a few steps today, but it looks amazing!
We concluded the day with our Super Reader Assembly, and our entire class (and every K-G.4 student) was awarded a clipboard and a McDonald's coupon! Way to go Grade 3/4!

Thanks to Mr. Banman my computer monitor problem was fixed last night, so after sorting that out this morning we got rolling. The students did some journalling about a time when things didn't go as they planned but ended up ok in the end. Then it was on to WW where they continued with their choice writing. Some students have been dismayed to find out that for choice writing I won't let them choose to write a 3 line nonsense poem. School is challenging sometimes. :)
After WW we had RW, and we spent the time today on Independent Reading and then enjoying a few more pages from 'The Hobbit'.
Following recess we had Math, and the 3's entered the world of fractions today while the 4's continued with their work from yesterday. The 3's are focusing more on 'fair shares' and 'equal parts' right now, while the 4's went on to learn about benchmarks today (0, 1/2, 1).
Then the class had P.E., followed by P.O.W. with Mr. Banman.
Many of the students enjoyed a hot dog lunch and hangman at lunch hour today! Thanks to Seth's mom for her part in organizing that fun event.
After lunch we had S.S., and continued through the chapter on coastal peoples playing a fun game to go with it.

What a dreary, dismal day it was today (outside, anyways!).
We began today with me discovering that my computer monitor and projector weren't working. It became quite apparent to us throughout the day that we utilize this technology a lot, and we've missed it tremendously! Mr. Banman loaned me a laptop for now, but hopefully the monitors will be repaired soon.
After our Olympic Check-In, we had Bible. We spoke today about how God is the Son, and looked up some verses in Matthew, Isaiah and Philippians to back that up. Then we had RW, and the students continued on into Chapter 7 of Charlotte's Web. For WW they worked on their choice writing which the students are really enjoying working on.
Following Music the students had Math, and the 4s entered the world of fractions today! We talked about the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number) and the importance of all parts being equal when referring to fractions.
After lunch we had S.S., and we continued with our learning about the coastal people.
The students ended their day with Library and P.E.

We updated our medal count today, and did our O.W.I. Ask your child about the picture we looked at today (Click here to view it!).
Then we had an extended Reading Workshop period, where we enjoyed another chapter from 'The Hobbit' and also worked in Guided Reading groups. Today our focus was on how good readers ask questions while they read. Each student had to come up with two questions that couldn't be answered with a yes or no response.
After DPA and recess we went on to Writing Workshop. We spent some time reflecting on the importance of working as a team, followed by reading poetry together.
During Math today the students culminated our current unit by completing (or almost completing) 'Show What You Know' from this unit. On to bigger and better things tomorrow!
After lunch we had Science and our focus today was the food chain, and how everything we eat either is a plan or comes from/depends on plants. Be sure to ask your child where gelatin comes from! :)

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! We had a wonderful day at school today. We started with devotions with Mrs. Everett.
Then we did our Olympic medal count and had our spelling test. And that was pretty much the end of the hard work for the day! Afterward we had our Valentine party and the children distributed their Valentine's cards to one another.
Thanks to all of you everyone enjoyed a delightful spread of almost all heart healthy food that you provided. Thank you so much to everyone who helped with that.
That was followed by a trip to the YMCA for our final swimming lesson. I was told that we will receive their final report cards from the lesson late next week or earlier the following week. I will send them home as soon as I have them.
We came back for a few minutes in the lab working on typing. I sure have noticed a huge difference in the children's typing ability. Many of them can type more than 15 words per minute now. I am very proud!
Thanks to Mrs. Ryskamp and all of her efforts, we had a great end to our day. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon staying dry in the gym for Jump Rope for Heart. What a great event and perfect timing to be on Valentine's Day.
The only homework this weekend is to complete overdue work. There was no spelling worksheet this week. Enjoy your weekend with your family and God bless!

Today was a busy and productive day. We began with our Olympic check in and then had Bible, where we discussed why God is called 'Lord' and 'Father'. I also let the kids know about our plans for Grandparent's Day, and how our class will be contributing. I'll let them share that with you!
Afterwards we had Handwriting, and the 4's did a page of practicing while the 3's learned upper-case A and O in cursive. Then Grammar, and the focus was on pronouns.
Following recess our class had Music and then DPA. Then we had Math, and we're finishing up our unit on measurement. There won't be a formal test on this one, just for time's sake, but rest assured that there has been plenty of assessment, both on paper and observational, throughout the unit.
After lunch we had Art and the class finished their Valentine card holders and worked on a little project for Valentine's Day as well.
We finished the day with Chapel.
Students are welcome to bring valentine cards tomorrow, which will be delivered during our party. They may also bring a food item to the party if you'd like to contribute something.

After recess the students had Math. The 4's worked on m2 (square metres) and the 3's worked on mass, using kg and g.
They then had P.E. and P.O.W. with Mr. Banman.
Following lunch we had S.S. and worked on the longhouse drawings the class started last day. This was interrupted by a fire drill which our class handled well.

Then we had Independent Reading and Spelling (Olympic words). This was followed by WW and many of the children are going on to a choice writing, which means they get to choose what they write about.
The students had Music after Recess, and then Math. The 4's learned about area, using square centimetres (cm2) and the 3's continued working on perimeter.
During S.S. today we talked about the homes of a few different aboriginal groups. The students are working on a small art assignment about these as well.

Today was the last day of FSA testing for the Grade 4's thankfully! We're all looking forward to getting back to our routine next week (remember that Monday is a holiday though). We finished the numeracy component of the test with 40 multiple choice questions.
The 3's worked on Spelling, Handwriting and Grammar while the 4's were testing. Then we had recess (we caught a brief glimpse of the Olympic Opening Ceremonies), and then were off to swimming. Just one more week left and the lesson set will be complete. After swimming we had Computers, and then following lunch we had Science. Today we started learning about food chains and food webs! The class finished their day with P.E.

We got back just in time for recess and then the students had a short Music class with Mr. Banman, followed by DPA. So far, the day had been far too fun...it must be Math time! :)
The Grade 4's finished the final written component of their FSA (this time on Numeracy), while the 3's worked in the Fellowship Hall in their textbooks.
After lunch we had Art and the students created their holders for their Valentines. Here is a class list for you, but please don't send them in until the 14th.

I'll provide drinks. We tried to come up with a balance of healthy snacks and treats.
One other quick note: please only send water bottles that seal properly. Many students have been coming to school with disposable water bottles or milk containers and as a result lids are lift off or aren't screwed on properly and we've had a number of big spills. I won't allow the children to have those bottles in the classroom anymore, so please don't send them. Thanks.

After that, the Grade 4's wrote the final L.A. component of their FSA test, the long write. Their topic was "Coming in Second Place". The 3's worked on finishing the narratives and then their poetry anthologies.
After recess we had Math, and we all worked on finding area using pattern blocks as units, and then the 3's focused on finding the perimeter. Please practice this with them at home!
They then had P.E. and P.O.W. with Mr. Banman.

Today started with the 4's going off for their first section of FSA testing (Reading Comprehension). The 3's worked on Spelling and Math while the 4's were out of the room. Then we had DPA together (Mrs. Bergen's first time watching them play 'Capture the Flag' - what a riot!), and then Recess.
Afterwards we had WW, and students worked on their narratives. Some have now finished. After that the 3's worked on some extra math practice while the 4's learned about the 24-hour clock. They should be able to convert 24-hour time into 12 hour time, so please practice this at home!
Following lunch we had Science, and continued our work on adaptations, focusing on fish. Then the students got the creative juices flowing and created their own animal, describing the habitat it lives in and what adaptations it has to allow it to survive and thrive in it's environment. I saw loads of awesome ideas being recorded!
I led chapel today and our focus was on Esther, and finding courage when we know what the right thing to do is but feel afraid. :)
Afterwards we had WW, and students worked on their narratives. Some have now finished. After that the 3's worked on some extra math practice while the 4's learned about the 24-hour clock. They should be able to convert 24-hour time into 12 hour time, so please practice this at home!
Following lunch we had Science, and continued our work on adaptations, focusing on fish. Then the students got the creative juices flowing and created their own animal, describing the habitat it lives in and what adaptations it has to allow it to survive and thrive in it's environment. I saw loads of awesome ideas being recorded!
I led chapel today and our focus was on Esther, and finding courage when we know what the right thing to do is but feel afraid. :)
